Make A Decoupage Welcome Sign For Your Business

Make a decoupage welcome sign to hang up near your front door to greet the customers who visit your business. This project will be fun to complete and will add some personality to the outside of your shop.

Use The Following Supplies

  • piece of wood
  • varnish
  • mixing stick
  • sandpaper (fine grit)
  • hand sander
  • wooden letters
  • craft glue
  • acrylic craft paint
  • paintbrushes (various sizes)
  • pictures or designs
  • picture hanging kit
  • nails
  • hammer
  • screwdriver
  • electric drill
  • twine
  • acrylic top coat

Varnish And Sand The Wood

Varnish the front of the wood on a protected surface. Stir up the varnish before applying it so that air bubbles are eliminated. Use a medium-sized paintbrush to apply this product in straight lines. Work from top to bottom. Varnish takes several hours to dry. Once it feels dry, sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper.

Add The Pictures

Select pictures to decorate the background of your sign. Decide how you would like to arrange them before attaching them. Take into consideration that parts of your sign will have words on it, so be sure to move the pictures to areas where they will not be covered up. Apply varnish to the back of each picture and press all of them down onto the surface of the wood.

Apply a coating of varnish over the pictures. Wait, again, for this coat to dry. If the pictures are sealed well, and you cannot feel the edges of any of them, enough varnish has been applied. If you would like to add an additional coat, repeat all of the same varnishing steps.

Add The Words

Paint wooden letters to spell out the words on your sign. Acrylic craft paint can be used to do this. Once the paint on each letter has dried, apply craft glue to the back of them and press them down onto the front of the sign. Wait for the glue to dry and then spray the front of the sign with a clear, acrylic coating. This coating will help protect the pictures and lettering from moisture.

Hang Up The Sign

A picture hanging kit and a couple tools are all that you will need to hang up the new sign outside of your business. Place the hardware on the back of the sign with a screwdriver. Hang the hardware off of nails that you install on the front of the building. Another option is to drill holes in the top of the sign and insert a piece of twine. You can hang it off of a doorknob or hook.

You can create a fun and personal sign using these DIY steps—but for an easier alternative, have a customized sign company, like Apogee Signs, create your company sign.
